Berlin and just outside it, further afield if it's worth the trip. Every district has its own building stock and its own recurring problems, so the pages below say what I actually run into rather than repeating the same paragraph six times.
Neukölln
Dense Gründerzeit Altbau, a lot of it being properly renovated for the first time.
Kreuzberg
Altbau, 1980s social housing and old commercial courtyards, often on their second renovation.
Mitte
The widest mix in the city — restored Altbau, Plattenbau panel blocks and new build side by side.
Prenzlauer Berg
Almost entirely renovated Altbau, now due a second round twenty-five years on.
Friedrichshain
Altbau, listed 1950s blocks on Karl-Marx-Allee, and panel-built flats behind them.
Charlottenburg
Grand Altbau with the city's most elaborate interiors, and 1950s infill filling the gaps between.
